Five Signs You Need a New Roof

    By Mike Farist

Have you taken a good look at your roof lately? No? You are not alone. Most people hardly notice their roof unless there’s major damage or interior leaking.

While it’s easy to take your roof for granted, it protects your home and your investment. A roof in Northeast Ohio typically has a lifespan of 10 to 15 years. Beyond that point, it will start to have wear and tear from the daily elements.

Once your roof begins to age, it’s important to replace it before there is any significant damage to the roof itself or your home’s interior.

Is your roof trying to tell you something?

Your roof will usually give you clues it’s time for replacement. If you know what to look for, you’ll know when it’s time to contact a roof replacement specialist. If you’re wondering, “Do I need a new roof?”, it’s a good time to look at the signs.

5 signs you need a new roof

    1. Missing, broken or buckling shingles

When shingles look funny, that’s usually an obvious sign the roof needs to be evaluated. Your shingles should lie flat on the roof, be fully intact and covering the entire underlayment. If the shingles are compromised, the roof desk is not fully protected from moisture, which can lead to interior damage.

    2. Shingles missing their protective granules

Balding shingles is an obvious sign the roof has aged. Those granules protect the shingles from the sun and other elements, so their loss can lead to damage to the shingle itself. Asphalt shingles will rot, leaking moisture, once the granules wear away.

    3. Cracks or gaps in flashing

The flashing seals the “seams” of your roof, so it’s vitally important to keeping your roof intact. If you see gaps around the flashing, it is often a sign that a roof replacement is a good idea.

    4. Cracks that allow water or daylight to penetrate

If you can see daylight or water seeping through your roof, that’s an obvious sign of an aged roof. If you have access to your attic, and you can see daylight from the interior, your roof is ready for replacement. Water coming from the ceiling or a sagging ceiling are obvious signs that your roof is no longer keeping the elements out. Address any signs of water damage promptly, as those issues only get worse – and sometimes quickly!

    5. You’ve sustained a major storm

Obviously, if you have a tree limb on your roof, or major damage, you’ll know it. But what most people don’t know is storm damage might not be visible from the ground. Hail can leave thousands of tiny punctures that damage your roof. You should never attempt to get on your roof yourself. Call the professionals, who can safely assess your roof for damage.
